How to Get a Turkish Tax Number: A 2026 Guide for Foreign Individuals

A Turkish tax number is commonly called vergi numarası or vergi kimlik numarası. A foreign individual may need a tax identifier for a particular transaction in Türkiye. Start by asking the requesting organisation which identifier it needs for your circumstances.

As checked on 15 October 2026, GİB offers an official Digital Tax Office application for a potential tax number for foreigners. Obtaining an identifier and assessing your tax obligations are separate tasks: the document does not settle every question about income or business activity.

Understand the identifier

A potential tax number identifies a person for tax-related and associated administrative transactions. Do not confuse it with a foreign identity number, residence permit or work authorisation. If you already have a Turkish identifier, disclose this to the requesting institution and tax office before submitting a new application.

Foreign individuals and foreign companies follow different documentary routes. This guide concerns an individual. Corporate registration should be assessed separately, based on the entity and the intended transaction.

Step 1. Use the official service

Visit the Digital Tax Office on dijital.gib.gov.tr and select the application for foreigners. The official form is linked in the sources below. Check the full address before entering passport information. A search advertisement does not establish that a page belongs to the government.

Someone helping with a tax-number application should not need your email password, banking verification codes or remote control of your device. Keep the task limited to the information actually necessary for the procedure.

Step 2. Prepare accurate information

Have your valid passport and current contact details ready. The form asks for personal, birth and parental information, country, passport details and dates, telephone and address. Follow the live form because required fields and verification rules can change.

Create a private checklist before starting. Separate given names and surname, check dates and match spellings to the document. Do not invent an address or telephone number to get past a validation message. Ask GİB how to handle a field that does not fit your situation.

Step 3. Complete and review the application

Copy information systematically from the original document. Check similar-looking letters and digits, the day-month order and the distinction between issue and expiry dates. Use the date picker where helpful.

Review each field before confirming accuracy and submitting. Browser autofill can insert the wrong country or contact information. If a label is unclear, resolve its meaning rather than guessing.

Step 4. Keep the result securely

Following a successful application, save the available confirmation and check your name, passport association and identifier. Keep a secure backup. Send the document only to an organisation that needs it for a defined transaction, using an appropriate channel.

If no file appears, do not assume no record was created. Retain the system message and establish the status before submitting the same application repeatedly. Ask the tax authority about reissuance or corrections.

If the online process fails

Check both the entered information and the exact error. A technical interruption, identity mismatch and existing record call for different responses. Note the time and wording. Redact unnecessary personal details from any screenshot used to explain the issue.

Contact GİB or the relevant tax office if you cannot resolve the problem. Before attending in person, confirm the office and documentary requirements. Preparing the original passport and a copy of the identity page is sensible, but confirm the requirements for your particular request.

Do not alter a letter or use different document details simply to bypass an error. Inconsistent records can complicate later transactions and correction requests.

Before using the number

Ask the bank, counterparty or other institution what else is required. A tax number does not guarantee a bank account, transaction approval or immigration status. Each procedure has its own eligibility and verification rules.

If you intend to conduct business, distinguish your personal identifier from business registration, accounting and reporting requirements. The number does not replace company formation or advice on your tax position.

Common questions

Is an online application possible?

GİB provides an official application service for foreigners. Completion depends on the person's circumstances and data checks; a fixed issuance time should not be promised to everyone.

What if my passport changes?

Ask the tax office how to update the record and confirm the receiving institution's requirements. Do not automatically create another record.

Should I send the document to a marketing agency?

A marketing discussion generally needs a description of the business task rather than a full passport or tax document. Share personal information only for a clear, necessary purpose.

SIMPLEIST provides this guide as general information for international entrepreneurs and professionals working with Türkiye. Direct individual registration and tax-obligation questions to GİB and an appropriately qualified adviser.
